Why This Book Exists
This book has been many years in the making. Not because it is long, but because understanding what the Bible actually says, rather than what we have been taught that it says, is a far more difficult task than most people realise. Most people who attend church are not deliberately misled; they are simply taught a particular framework and then read the Bible through that framework for the rest of their lives. Unlearning what has been assumed, and returning to the Bible to allow it to speak for itself, is an extremely difficult process and can take many years.
The book of Hebrews is often treated as a theological explanation of Christ’s priesthood, written to Jewish Christians in the first century who were in danger of returning to Judaism. In that historical setting, there is some truth, but this is far from the complete story. Hebrews is not simply a historical letter. It is a forward-looking book, written for a critical time when the work of Christ must be clearly understood by those who will ‘serve the living God’.
Facing Today’s Issues
In many ways, Hebrews stands out as the most relevant book in the Bible, tackling issues that remain central today. Whether science has replaced God, why suffering exists in a world created by a loving God, what Christ actually came to accomplish, what the New Covenant really is, and what is required of those who serve God at the end of this age.
This book proceeds on a very simple principle: if an explanation of scripture creates contradictions elsewhere in the Bible, then the explanation is wrong. As far as possible, everything presented here has been tested against the whole of scripture, not against tradition, denomination, or personal opinion. The Bible must agree with itself from beginning to end.
The conclusion that emerges is that Hebrews is not only explaining what Christ did, but what still remains to be done. Christ came to do the will of the Father, and that will did not end with His resurrection. Hebrews explains the continuation of that work, the Order under which it operates, and the responsibility of those who are called to serve the living God in the final period of this age.
This book is therefore written for a very specific purpose and, ultimately, for a very specific group of people. It will not be of interest to everyone, and it is not intended to be. But for those who read the Bible and feel that there must be more to it than is commonly taught, and for those who believe that understanding the Bible correctly must lead to action and responsibility, this book is written for you.
This volume is the first of three related books.
Hebrews For Today explains who the servants of God are and what their role is.
New Covenant For Today explains the message they carry—the Kingdom of God, the Millennium, and the New Covenant as one and the same system.
Revelation For Today explains the sequence of events leading to the establishment of that Kingdom.
These three books together form a single explanation of the purpose of Christ, the New Covenant, and the conclusion of this age.
This book is being made available freely so that anyone who wishes to read it may do so. The reader is encouraged to check every point against the scriptures. If what is written here is correct, it should stand on the Bible alone. If it does not, it should be rejected.
The book of Hebrews says, “Today if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”
Those words were not intended for the past. They were written for a time when understanding would be required, decisions must be made, and action would be inescapable.
That time, I believe, is now.
